To prepare the dinner to which the narrator’s parents invite the Marquis de Norpois, Françoise goes shopping at Les Halles. Installed since 1181 in the 1st arrondissement of Paris on the site of the Saint- Lazare leper colony, Les Halles that Françoise visits are the work of the architect Baltard who built, from 1857 to 1874, twelve pavilions linked by covered streets in the shadow of the Saint-Eustache church.
