French assessment tests (TEF)

TEF INTEGRATION, RESIDENCE AND NATIONALITY
Recognized by the French Ministry of the Interior, the TEF Integration, Residence and Nationality (IRN) is intended for any foreign person over 16 years old who wishes to:
- demonstrate their level of French as part of the OFII civic integration program (minimum level A1 required);
- certify their level for an application for a long-term resident card (level A2 currently required, level B1 required starting in 2026);
- certify their level for an application for French nationality (level B1 currently required, level B2 required starting in 2026).
Mandatory tests (unchanged):
- Reading comprehension (30 min, 13 questions)
- Listening comprehension (10 min, 17 questions)
- Written expression (30 min)
- Oral expression (10 min)
No prior diploma is required to take the tests. However, we offer preparation courses to help you achieve the best possible results.
TEF Canada
TEF CANADA – TEST FOR IMMIGRATION TO CANADA
Recognized since 2002 by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), the TEF Canada certifies your level of French for immigration or citizenship procedures.
Mandatory tests:
- Reading comprehension
- Listening comprehension
- Written expression
- Oral expression
TEF CANADA (FOR A CANADIAN CITIZENSHIP APPLICATION)
The TEF Canada is recognized by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) as proof of your French proficiency for a Canadian citizenship application.
Mandatory tests:
- Listening comprehension
- Oral expression
TEF QUÉBEC
As part of immigration procedures for Québec, the Québec Ministry of Immigration, Francisation and Integration (MIFI) requires proof of French language proficiency. For these procedures, it recognizes the TEF Québec.
The TEF Québec is also recognized by IRCC for Canadian citizenship applications (more information on this page).
The TEF Québec consists of 4 modular tests:
- Listening comprehension: 40 min – 60 questions
- Speaking: 15 min – 2 topics to discuss
- Reading comprehension: 60 min – 50 questions
- Writing: 60 min – 2 topics to write about
TEF STUDIES
The TEF has been recognized since 2004 by the French Ministry of Higher Education as part of the DAP procedure (Preliminary Admission Request).
The test assesses French language skills in both written and oral forms for any international student applying for admission to the first cycle of university studies in France.
The TEF then consists of 4 mandatory tests:
- Reading comprehension
- Listening comprehension
- Vocabulary and structure
- Written expression
The Speaking test is optional for the Preliminary Admission Request.
To demonstrate a sufficient language level for first-year university enrollment, you must obtain a score equal to or greater than 400/699 on the written TEF tests.
TEF General
The results are valid for two years.
The TEF is officially recognized by:
- The French Ministry of National Education
- The Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation
- The French Ministry of the Interior
- Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada
- The Québec Ministry of Immigration, Francisation and Integration
- The Swiss State Secretariat for Migration
The TEF consists of 5 tests:
- Listening comprehension (CO)
- Reading comprehension (CE)
- Speaking (EO)
- Writing (EE)
- Vocabulary and structure (LS)
Your results certificate is valid for 2 years from the exam date.
You will receive by email, within 1 to 10 business days (approximately 1 to 2 weeks), a secure link allowing you to download your digital certificate.
