“Europe, a project for peace” : An engaging and inspiring afternoon at the Alliance Française in The Hague
To mark Europe Day, which celebrates Robert Schuman’s historic declaration, the Alliance Française in The Hague had the honour of hosting a special round-table discussion on the theme : « Europe, a project for peace ». 🕊️
Organised at the suggestion of Juliette Vidal and of Maëlle Nativel, the event brought together diplomats, academics, experts in international relations and committed representatives of European youth for a vital discussion on Europe’s role as a forum for dialogue, cooperation and peace.
A discussion at the heart of European issues
Against a backdrop of international geopolitical tensions and security challenges, this meeting provided an opportunity for a rich, insightful and much-needed discussion on European integration, its founding values and its future.
The speakers shared their analyses, experiences and perspectives on the key issues of peace, diplomacy and cooperation within the European Union.

- M. Roeland Böcker, former Permanent Representative of Kingdom of the Netherlands
from Council of Europe - M. Mika Markus Leinonen, European Union representative to international organisations and liaison officer specialising in security matters for the European External Action Service
- Dr Maxine David, lecturer at l’Universiteit Leiden, foreign policy analyst and specialist in Russian-European relations
- Hélène Pichon, director ofAlliance Française in The Hague and coordinator of the network of Alliances Françaises in the Netherlands
- Maëlle Nativel, Youth Ambassador and International Relations student at Universiteit Leiden
- Juliette Vidal, Youth Ambassador specialising in European integration
The audience, which included many prominent figures and committed participants, helped to make this event a genuine opportunity for discussion and collective reflection.
The launch of the Europ’Alliances competition
Following the round-table discussion, the participants watched a screening of several short films directed by the Alliances Françaises in Europe on the theme of peace and European integration.
Ce projet a réuni plusieurs Alliances Françaises européennes engagées autour d’une même ambition : faire dialoguer les cultures et promouvoir l’idéal européen à travers la création audiovisuelle.
Ont participé à cette première édition du concours :

- l’Alliance Française Bruxelles-Europe (Belgique)
- l’Alliance Française d’Erevan (Arménie)
- l’Alliance Française de Genève (Suisse)
- l’Alliance Française de La Haye (Pays-Bas)
- l’Alliance Française de Strasbourg (France)
- l’Alliance Française de Porto (Portugal)
Le public a ensuite été invité à voter pour le film le plus marquant, donnant ainsi naissance au concours Europ’Alliances, une belle initiative visant à promouvoir la créativité, le dialogue interculturel et les valeurs européennes auprès de la jeunesse. 
Un partenariat au service des valeurs européennes
Cet événement a également été rendu possible grâce au partenariat de la Présidence chypriote 
du Conseil de l’UE en 2026, que nous remercions chaleureusement pour son soutien dans l’organisation de cette journée.
Construire l’Europe, c’est choisir la paix
Au-delà des débats et des échanges, cette table ronde a rappelé avec force que le projet européen demeure avant tout un projet de paix.
Une paix qui se construit par le dialogue, la coopération, la transmission des valeurs démocratiques et l’engagement des nouvelles générations.
